John Perkins:
Born the son of a sharecropper, John Perkins grew up in dire poverty in Mississippi. Fleeing to California at 17 after his older brother’s murder at the hands of a town marshall, Perkins vowed to never return. After converting to Christianity in 1960, he did return to his home state where his outspoken nature and support and leadership in civil rights resulted in repeated harassment, beatings and imprisonment. He founded Voice of Calvary ministries, a Christian community development which founded a church, health center, leadership development program, thrift store, low income housing development and training center. The author of nine books, Perkins has also served on the board of directors for World Vision, Prison Fellowship, and National Association of Evangelicals, among others.
