Fathers of the Faith - The Fathers

~ Henry Blackaby ~ Loren Cunningham ~ Jack Hayford ~ Lloyd Ogilvie ~ John Perkins ~ Winkie Pratney ~

Henry Blackaby

Please note: Although Dr. Blackaby agreed to participate with us at the original taping there has been a known scheduling conflict since the beginning that made it unable for him to be present at The Cove. However, we were able to add his unique perspective and wisdom to the mix during a private DVD shoot.

Henry BlackabyHenry T. Blackaby is the founder and president emeritus of Blackaby Ministries International, an organization built to help people experience God.

Born in British Columbia, Dr. Blackaby has devoted his lifetime to ministry. He has served as a music director, education director, and pastor in churches in California and Canada, as well as president of Canadian Baptist Theological College for seven years and president of the Canadian Southern Baptist Conference. He has provided leadership to thousands of pastors and laymen across North America and has spoken to missionaries and other groups in over ninety countries of the world.

Dr. Blackaby studied English and history at the University of British Columbia as an undergraduate and earned his B.D. and Th.M. from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds four honorary doctorate degrees.

In 1970, Dr. Blackaby followed God’s call to pastor a tiny church in Saskatoon, Canada. Not only did Faith Baptist Church grow to many times its original membership, but it led to the founding of thirty-eight new churches and became a center for pastoral training.

Dr. Blackaby went on to serve on staff at the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through the Home Mission Board, he led revival and spiritual awakening in the life of the convention. He also served as special assistant to the presidents of the International Mission Board and LifeWay Christian Resources. Although he is now officially retired, Dr. Blackaby continues to provide consultative leadership in the life of the Christian community as well as among CEO’s throughout North America.

Dr. Blackaby has published an array of spiritually influential messages in his lifetime, most notably Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God (1990), which has sold 7 million copies and has been translated into over 45 languages. His books, Experiencing God Together and Experiencing God Day by Day Devotional, both won the Gold Medallion Award.

Henry lives with his wife, Marilynn, in Rex, Georgia. He has five children all of whom are serving in Christian ministry, and fourteen grandchildren. His long-range goal is to encourage revival and spiritual awakening in the United States, Canada, and across the world through speaking, praying, enlisting, writing and mentoring. His hobbies are reading and traveling.

He is a prolific author, having written dozens of books and 600 hymns and choruses, and has served on various interdenominational committees and councils.

As the founding pastor of The Church On The Way, a pastorate that began as a “temporary” assignment to shepherd 18 people in 1969 and continued fruitfully for more than three decades as the congregation grew to more than 10,000 members.

A nationally and internationally recognized scholar and teacher, Dr. Hayford draws on a wealth of experience to mentor other leaders and today is recognized as a “pastor to pastors.” His travels and ministry to denominational and interdenominational gatherings have caused Pastor Hayford to become an acknowledged bridge-builder—helping forge healthy bonds among all sectors of the Church. The current focus of Dr. Hayford’s ministry is to equip pastors of many church affiliations, serving diverse communities around the world. This is accomplished through the following venues:

  1. The Jack W. Hayford School of Pastoral Nurture, founded in 1997, provides an interactive atmosphere where senior pastors can be prepared to meet the challenging demands of the 21st Century.

In addition, Pastor Hayford is a frequent contributor to Christian periodicals and is the general editor of the Spirit-Filled Life publications produced by Thomas Nelson that have sold more than two million volumes. Hayford’s Electronic Spirit-Filled Life Library is a cutting-edge resourcefor today’s leaders.  Soon to be released is the Spirit-Filled Life Commentary, a several volume exposition and study guide of the Bible.

He is Chairman of the Board of Living Way Ministries, which is responsible for developing and distributing the media and print resources from his teaching ministry. In addition, Pastor Hayford reaches an international audience through daily radio and weekly television programs.

With keen insight into God’s Word and a commitment to practical application, he has become recognized for balance in preaching the truth.  He avoids extremes, while not diluting or compromising the demands of truth, graciously revealing the heart of a holy and merciful God for each situation or issue.

Lloyd Ogilvie

Lloyd OgilvieThe consistent focus of the ministry of Lloyd Ogilvie through the years has been on the care, encouragement and support of business, political and community leaders. Beginning his ministry in Winnetka, Illinois, working with the business leaders of Chicago, he developed a deep appreciation for the impact of leaders on society and their need to receive sensitive pastoral care to live out their faith in the pressures, stresses and immense challenges of their work. This emphasis continued in his ministry as Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, then for twenty-three years as Pastor of the historic First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood where he sought to enable leaders in the greater Los Angeles basin.

As a pastor of a large congregation in the communications capitol, his guiding conviction was that all Christians are called into ministry and that the role of the local church is to equip them to be a bold, articulate apostolate of hope in the structures of society. Along with a team of pastors and staff people, Dr. Ogilvie sought to lead the church as a laboratory of experimentation with new forms of church life and innovative methods of meeting the needs of the members so that they could be contagious communicators of their faith and courageous witnesses in social issues.

On January 24, 1995, Dr. Ogilvie was elected the 61st Chaplain of the United States Senate. In addition to opening the Senate each day in prayer, his duties as full-time Chaplain included counseling and spiritual care for the Senators, their families and their staffs, a combined constituency of six thousand people. Dr. Ogilvie's days were filled with meetings with Senators about spiritual and moral issues, assisting Senators' staffs with research on theological and biblical questions, speaking to five Senate Bible Study and Prayer groups, encouraging such groups as the weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast, and sharing in small discussion and reflection groups among the Senators. In Dr. Ogilvie's words, "I saw my role as Chaplain to be an intercessor for the members of the Senate family, a trusted prayer partner, and a faithful counselor to them as they sought to know and do God's will in the monumental responsibilities entrusted to them." He served as Chaplain for eight years and was on duty during our nation’s time of crisis on September 11, 2001.

In February 1996, Dr. Ogilvie was recognized by Baylor University in a worldwide survey as one of the ‘12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world’. Included on the list, in which seven denominations are represented, are Rev. Billy Graham and Dr. John Stott.

Dr. Ogilvie has begun a new phase in his life-long commitment to be an inspirational speaker. Working as President of Leadership Unlimited, he is consistently on call as a speaker, writer – he has authored 52 books plus served as General Editor of Communicators Word Books Commentary Series of the Bible – and resource consultant. He often preaches at business and professional gatherings, retreats and churches, and leads clergy conferences on the theme Preaching With Passion. The basic intention of these activities is to impact the nation by enabling present and emerging leaders to press on with wisdom, vision, charisma, and courage. He believes that the great need of our time is for spiritually empowered, morally rooted, ethically focused, men and women who through creative introspection are able to lead with a integrity, intentionality, imagination and impelling inspiration.

Recently, Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California established the Lloyd John Ogilvie Preaching Institute and the Lloyd John Ogilvie Chair of Preaching as part of the Brehm Center for Worship, Theology, and the Arts. Dr. Ogilvie will hold his Preaching With Passion Conferences at Fuller.

Dr. Ogilvie is married to Doris Kaiser Ogilvie, has three children and four grandchildren.

John Perkins

John PerkinsJohn M. Perkins is a sharecropper’s son who grew up in New Hebron, Mississippi amidst dire poverty. Fleeing to California at age 17 after his older brother’s murder at the hands of a town marshal, he vowed never to return. However after converting to Christianity in 1960 he returned to Mendenhall, Mississippi to share the gospel of Christ. While in Mississippi, his outspoken nature and support and leadership in civil rights demonstrations resulted in repeated harassment, beatings and imprisonment.

In Mendenhall, Perkins and his wife, Vera Mae, founded Voice of Calvary Ministries. This Christian community development ministry started a church, health center, leadership development program, thrift store, low-income housing development, and training center. In 1982, the Perkins family returned to California and lived in the city of Pasadena where he and his wife founded Harambee Christian Family Center in Northwest Pasadena, a neighborhood that had one of the highest daytime crime rates in California. Harambee is yet standing, running numerous programs including after school tutoring, Good News Bible Clubs, an award-winning technology center, summer day camp, youth internship programs, and a college scholarship program. In 1983, while yet in California, Perkins and his wife, along with a few friends and other major supporters,  established the John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation & Development, Inc for the sole purpose of supporting their mission of advancing the principles of Christian community development and racial reconciliation throughout the world. The Foundation is now headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi.

At the end of that same decade Dr. Perkins called together a group of Christian leaders from across America that was bonded by one significant commitment – expressing the love of Christ in America’s poor communities, not at arms length, but at the grass-roots level. An association was formed and the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) held its first annual conference in Chicago in 1989. CCDA has grown from 37 founding members to 6,800 individuals and 600 churches, ministries, institutions and businesses in more than 100 cities and townships across the country.

Today, Dr. Perkins is president of John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development. He is one of the leading evangelical voices to come out of the American civil rights movement. He is also an internationally known author, speaker, and teacher on issues of racial reconciliation and Christian community development.

Despite dropping out of school in the third grade, Dr. Perkins has been recognized for his work with eight honorary doctorates from colleges and universities across the country. For his tireless work, he received honorary doctorates from Wheaton College, Gordon College, Huntington College, Geneva College, Spring Arbor University, North Park College, and Belhaven College.

He is the author of nine books including A Quiet Revolution, Let Justice Roll Down, With Justice For All, Beyond Charity, He’s My Brother, Resurrecting Hope, and A Time to Heal. He has also written numerous chapters in other books. Dr. Perkins has formally served on the board of directors of World Vision, Prison Fellowship, National Association of Evangelicals, Spring Arbor University, and on fifteen other boards.

In 2004, Perkins partnered with Seattle Pacific University to launch the campus-based John Perkins Center for Reconciliation, Leadership Training and Community Development. The Center is a first-of-its-kind partnership and what Dr. Perkins describes as “the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.”
